Whenever a new landscape is installed at a residence or commercial property, artificial grass is often used instead of real grass. Artificial grass offers the advantage of being able to prepare in advance for things like drainage. This is why it's a favorite for both landscapers and homeowners alike.
One common question we get about artificial grass installation is whether or not it can be placed over a concrete area. In short, yes you can place artificial grass over concrete. The most challenging problem with installing artificial grass over concrete is the lack of drainage. Synthetic grass drains just as well as natural grass when laid over a normal base of soil but this is not the case when placed over a concrete surface. If not done properly, this can lead to water accumulation and mildew under your lawn. In the worst scenarios, it may lead to pooling water on your lawn rendering it basically useless. You may read on other blogs that placing a layer of sand in between your turf and the concrete can help with the drainage issues. We do not recommend you do this. The sand will almost certainly wash away over some years and you'll be left with the drainage problems mentioned above. The other thing to consider is that installing artificial grass over concrete will not give you a cushion feel when running or playing on the grass. This may not concern you if you don't plan on using it for activity but if it is a sports turf or a puppy pee pad, you may want to reconsider. One solution (besides removing the concrete before installing the artificial turf) is to install drainage tiles between the pavement and the turf. You may want to add an extra layer of some kind of padding and/or using a thicker artificial grass for a softer surface as well. On the other hand, a slippery concrete surface such as a pool deck may benefit from some artificial grass. Turf is more pleasant than carpets and less taxing on the joints than concrete.
